This past October six I flew to Paris with tickets to go see Steve Coleman, one of my mentors and a great inspiration, at La Petite Halle (La Villette) where he is artist in residency for a fortnight.
We met in NYC back in 2010. I had a "lesson" that went on for 10 hours, split in 2 days, where we played and talked about so many different things from Bach to... the Sun, improvisation and music in general (he's self taught), Von Freeman, John Coltrane, methaphisycs and many many other subjects. We have been in touch ever since.
October 6 at La Petite Halle: I was late! My flight had been delayed and I made my sister run from the Ch. de Gaulle with me, having had nothing to eat..., to try and make it to the 2nd Set. We got there at the very last song of the 1st Set, and ordered something to bite and drink while we waited for the "Elements" to come onstage again.
I could never have expected that The "5 Elements" would play songs like "'Round Midnight" (T. Monk), "Chega de Saudade" (A.C. Jobim) and "O Tico Tico no Fubá" (Zequinha de Abreu) among Steve's rhythmically complex compositions, but they did.
I went to see them backstage in the end, mentioning my surprise with the setlist's song choices and he said "I thought you'd come up and sing". Say...what??? "Could I've come up and sing'''?", "Sure. Aren't you in Paris tomorrow? Pick a song and you'll sing it with us tomorrow". Oh God. "Ok...'Round Midnight!".
And so I came back the next night... went backstage and asked "Can you tell me something in advance?", "About 'Round Midnight?" he replied. "No, about how it's gonna go". He stated "We might throw you a curve ball... or a bone".
So... this is how it went. I'm still recovering from this great honour and am so deeply thankful for his trust in me, having invited me to sing at his show. Thank you Steve for your great generosity. You'll continue to inspire me for years to come <3

Some of my best friends are singers é o título de um disco gravado pelo trio do contrabaixista Ray Brown, mas podia bem ser o ponto de partida para esta história.
Joana Machado, Mariana Norton e Marta Hugon
Just won an award for best funk/fusion song by Los Angeles based THE AKADEMIA MUSIC AWARDS!! I'm really excited and proud. This is a song I truly believe in and I'm so happy it's going to be internationally broadcasted, once the award is a marketing and promotion plan for my music all around the world.
Peace and <3
