Joana Machado is one of Portugal's current most original and sophisticated singer-songwriters

NEW RELEASE THIS FEB. 27 “DISTANCE”

If jazz is Joana Machado's home, Soul, R&B, and electronic music have deep roots within her, which bear fruit in her new album. In an intimate and confessional setting, the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication of "Distance"— lead track—reveals an original sonic universe that draws influence from musicians as diverse as Erykah Badu, Robert Glasper, and Kate Bush. With a delicate vocal approach anchored in emotion, accompanied by Chico Santos on drums and Lana Gasparotti on keyboards, this musical comeback reveals the maturity of the singer-songwriter, who wrote both the music and lyrics and shared production duties with Rodrigo Correia, who also plays guitar and bass.

"Joana Machado presents an aesthetically different musical proposal, an excellent production in partnership with Rodrigo Correia, performed by a group of musicians with a capacity for elevation, so necessary for this conception. Music, arrangements and lyrics thought with good taste and without losing an accessible and necessary musicality. It is clearly one of the most interesting projects to be launched in the year 2026."

"Joana Machado, with 20 years of career and 5 albums released, may be a name yet to be discovered by many, less connected to the Planeta Jazz scene. It may be, but it shouldn't be, because her voice and solid career as a jazz singer make Joana, in addition to being a trainer and teacher, a singer and composer incessantly searching for the perfect song. And it was this search that brought us here, to "Distance," the perfect song that sounds like a classic 70s soul song, as if Minnie Riperton arrived in Lisbon with Robert Glasper in her entourage to channel nostalgia into the keys of a Fender Rhodes in the discovery of a retro-futuristic classic. "Distance" is just a preview of the album to be released at the end of the year, which, judging by the presentation, is already one of the most anticipated albums of the year."

Tiago Santos, “Heróis no Ar”, Oxigénio.FM

Having released five albums, she treats Jazz as a perfect playground, bringing in influences from soul to rock n' roll, thus building a unique and hard to label sound.

In this no-boundaries-between-genres territory, Joana sets her talent and versatility free.

“Prepare yourself for a truly unique experience (...) how many vocalists these days can really stand up to the test of being just “listened to”? (...) So in this age of mediocrity, when it’s dangerous to be diferent, along comes Joana Machado. She is dangerous because she allows us to open up to ourselves , to dream, to face reality, to dare to be diferent. She’s brilliant, adventurous, assertive, unique, has a voice that’s as clear as water crystals, and the courage to believe in our ability to listen. Her music has a healing quality, as all great music does (...)" Buster Williams
